11.15.07 playlist

T.G.I.F. everyone! I'm staying in tonight because I'm lazy, poor, and I have a lot of reading to do. This week was pretty shitty, but tonight made up for it. Why? Because I bought a bike to replace the one that was unrightfully stolen from me earlier in the week. I must name this new one since I didn't have the change to name the old one. Any suggestions? Maybe I'll post some pictures of my new (actually, it's pretty old) bike to help with the name suggestions.

So my Ipod was being a stupid bastard and I arrived at the station with zero songs in my Ipod. Thus we played a lot of NMF (new music files):

Songs of Summer

Hello lovelies! I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer whether it's spent lounging around the apartment sipping lemonade or slaving for a boss you despise at your summer internship. I am fortunate enough to have been in England for more than a month or so. The picture above was taken last week when a few friends and I decided to have a little picnic at a Brighton beach. In addition to sightseeing in England, I've also been able to explore Paris, Amsterdam, and Belgium! I would have loved to see Spain, Italy, and Greece, but a girl can't have everything. Anyway, enough about my summer.
This entry is dedicated, as it hints in the title, to the songs that I've enjoyed this summer. Now, these songs do not necessarily deal with summer in context, but they rather songs that I will forever associate with my summer abroad. Enjoy and please comment and share your songs of summer!
01. Daydreaming - All Girl Summer Fun Band
I thought this song would be appropriate not only for the band's name, but because I have been daydreaming a lot this summer. It feels amazing to actually just sit out in a park and have nothing to worry about.
02. Rehab - Amy Winehouse
Now this song may seem like a strange choice as a summer song, but Amy is from the UK and I've been hearing a lot of her here lately and everyone around me seems to be humming this song! Also, I've had two friends burn her CD for me and shipped it out to England. Thanks again you two!
03. Adventure - Bring Your Own Pet
"We are adventuring, we are adventurers" sums up this summer quite nicely.
04. Belleville Rendez-Vous (Version Française Par -M-) - Ben Charest
JC was kind enough to send me the soundtrack to the animated film The Triplets of Belleville and I played it on my way to Paris.
05. Life on Mars - David Bowie
I took a class first session called "Kissin' Cousins" and it isn't what you think. Friends in my summer program would often ask me, "Is that a class about incest?!" It was a class that analyzed the twentieth-century Anglo-American relationship. I enjoyed the class very much when my tutor played excerpts of Beatles footage and especially the music videos of David Bowie.
06. I Feel It All - Feist
Now this song has an extremely sentimental place in my heart this summer. I was lucky enough to catch Feist while she toured in England this summer. This is my favorite song off her latest album, the Reminder, and I was beyond stoked when she played this during her concert! I had just missed her Los Angeles performance in late June because I was already in England, but I'm glad I saw her in Portsmouth because the venue was much more intimate. To top it all off, I got to meet her after the show and she was simply adorable.
07. Homesick - Kings of Convenience
I started this playing this song a lot the last week or so. I found myself suddenly yearning to be back in California.
08. Amsterdam - Peter Bjorn and John
Yes, I went to Amsterdam. This was another album that JC was kind enough to send me.
09. On The Radio - Regina Spektor
Surprisingly I heard this song while on the coach to Amsterdam. The driver had it on some Dutch radio station and this song came on followed by a Feist song! I was overjoyed to hear such great artists being played on the radio. I knew it was a foreshadow to the lovely times I would experience in Amsterdam.
10. Too Strong - The Sea and Cake
Another song I like to listen to when I'm either lying down in a park or a beach.
Hope you have an opportunity to check out this list and please let me know what you think. Also, do not hesitate to contribute your own list of songs of summer! Ciao!
Think Big! loves you,
Samantha

Last show tonight!

All good things must come to an end (temporarily) and tonight is a prime example. This was our first quarter as full-fledged DJs on UCLAradio.com and although the station and its programs were on a month-long hiatus (due to the installation of a new console), we enjoyed every single hour spent in the station. We appreciate all the support and it's truly been a pleasure playing music for our listeners for two-hours every Saturday night. We hope you can tune in to our final show of the school year. We understand that many of you may be studying, so why not take a two hour break and listen in? Or you can listen while you're studying (we promise not to play anything too loud or too distracting). As always, there will be a theme and the only way you can find out what the theme will be is to listen!

Think Big! will be back in the fall and be sure to check the website (www.UCLAradio.com) during the summer for the new fall schedule!

Think Big! loves you,
Samantha

5.19.07 Playlist

I don't know why it took me a couple of shows to finally realize that I haven't been posting our playlist on the blog. I guess it's because I have the Myspace group and Facebook group to cover and I often forget about posting the playlist on the blog. Here you go (to those that care):

1. Aqualung - Pressure Suit - Memory Man
2. Rufus Wainwright - Going To A Town
3. Blondie - Denis - Plastic Letters
4. Rilo Kiley - Steve - Initial Friend EP
5. Tilly & the Wall - Bessa - Wild Like Children
6. Joanna Newsom - Sadie - Milk-Eyed Mender
7. Wilco - Either Way - Sky Blue Sky
8. Bilal - Sally - 1st Born Second
9. The Police - Roxanne - Outlandos d'Amour
10. Eric Clapton - Layla - Unplugged
11. Wyclef Jean - Saturday nite - Carnival
12. 2pac - California Love - All Eyez On Me
13.Mos Def - Jam on it - unreleased
14.Lupe Fiasco - Cold Blooded - unrelreased
15 Farbeicio Pechanha - the first track - Made In Brazil
16. Bjork - Earth Intruders - Volta
17. Artic Monkeys - Temptation Greets You Like Your Naughty Friend - Brainstorm
18. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Berlin - Baby 81
19. Caspian - Moksha - The Four Trees
20. Teddy Prendergrass - Close the door - Greatest hits

We had a theme initially, but being the wonderful fickle DJs that we are, we quickly dropped the idea. Aaron played a trio of birthday songs for me to choose from and I neglected to include those in the playlist. I'm sure if you're dying to find out Aaron can post the songs up later.
I'm also hoping that we can find a way to post an mp3 recording of our show. I am uneducated with anything related to computer technology so perhaps Aaron can find a way?! Haha, thanks again Aaron for that little birthday surprise and thank you reader for checking out our blog and for listening to our show!

If you're a guest DJ on Think Big! ...

I will probably make you take pictures of the radio station as well as take pictures of me. Ha! Since my sister was a bit hesitant to speak into the microphone, I made her useful by handing over my camera to her. This is what was produced:
The beautiful brand spankin' new console

Hard at work

The 'stache photo (which reminds me, I need a haircut!)

I took this picture of my refridgerator

Hopefully this Saturday Aaron will join me so I can snap some photo of him in action!

in between naps....

hey its Aaron again,

so this past show was AWESOME!!! big ups to Samantha (& her sis) for holding down the show and bringing in a record number of listens: 35,000,000,000 !!!!!! thats right, BILLION, everyone & their mama listened. We also got a show review of 4 stars our of 5 !They said the other star is in the mail & will arrive in 6-8 weeks (bad joke) But still thats more stars than "the devil wears prada" which u know u saw..

oh yea so if your not a myspace whore, & didnt know, there was a secret Maroon 5 show put on in san diego. So i went with some friends to see it. we stood in line for about two hours to get in since it was limited standing room only. So yea we got there and there were already a grip of people in line. I thought we were not going to get in since the venue was just a small youth center. So we stood/sat/squatted in line for about a hour and a half until a group of bald roadies came by passing out wrist bands. We got one...unfortunately there were a whole half block of people behind us that didnt get squat, sucks for them. But newayz we chilled in the street until it was time to go in.

The venue itself was a small youth center across Mira Mesa high school called the epicenter. Maybe only 250 or so people were able to get in. It was standing room only so me and my friends decided to chill in the back where there was a counter top we could post up on instead of being squished standing around on the floor. The crowd was varied...well sorta, a lot of teenagers, some younger kids with their parents, some older 20s/30s. The opening act was a cat named kevin michael or something. He had a good sound , but what killed it for me was his hair. He was a white guy with this freakin big ass curly hair afro. BIG ASS, like braid it or something, for real that took me right out of his set. haha, i think i have a pic. So after the warm up came maroon 5.

I'm not the biggest maroon 5 fan but i dig their sound. They played all their classics from songs about jane, but was kool was hearing their new songs off their yet to be released album. If you like maroon 5, then you'll like the album. It has a slightly different feel but it is unmistakenly maroon 5. I'm downloading the album as we speak :P He also did some original covers/mash ups, See the you tube video at the very bottom of the page.i would have more videos but my batteries were low (dont u hate when that happens?) Overall, it was pretty chill, their was a fight that broke out, crazy, but otherwise it wasnt a bad way to spend some free time.

you know, the free time in between naps...

peace & love,
A.

ps. i just finished downloading/listening to the album... i like it

A's green report...

its your boy, Aaron!

Hey world wide web. So yea lets start with the goods, and what i mean about that is the good healthy food i've been eating since the vegetarian challenge started a week ago....well sorta. Haha, so yea i thought this would make me eat healthier, but i think my subconscience is sneaky, so somehow i've been replacing meat not with vegetables, but with other bad stuff (aka snacking & desserts!!). I guess why thats i've been doing so well with the challenge. Vegan, on the other hand, that would kill me! (or make me stronger :P) so yea, as far as cooking here's a list of dished i've made:
-a flame-broiled veggie burger with avacado, lettuce, tomatoe, and cheddar cheese on a lightly toasted bun ( my favorite so far)
-homemade hummus
-cheese quesedilla
-a tomatoe/basil sauce on a bed of bowtie pasta garnished with a drizzle of motzerella cheese
-broilled salmon with asparagus & rice pilaf

haha the rest has been either cereal, fruit, or rubios lol One more week, here we go!!!

PS, how do u spell tomatoe?

This is proof of my limited Photoshop skillz

I don't think I even have Photoshop, but I used whatever my lap top has. Look what I made! Haha, it's really no big deal, but I actually created something.

I've put this up on my Myspace just because I'm so darn proud of myself. Yes, I know I just added some text to the picture that Aaron found on the Internet, but I also cropped it so boo yah!

We have a show tonight so please tune in. The theme is going to be "Ladies Night" in honor of Mother's Day. The theme was suggested to me a couple weeks back(by Mr. John Carlos Balcita) when UCLAradio.com was still down so I wasn't able to do it. I thought this weekend would be the perfect weekend to have an all-female show in lieu of Mother's Day! I will be accompanied by my lovely older sister, Stephanie. She promised only to come if I drove us down tomorrow morning to San Diego to visit our mom. What a sister, right? Haha. So yeah, it's all about girl power tonight. No boys allowed (you can still listen though, boys)!

Think Big! loves you,
Samantha

P.S. Have a request for tonight? Leave us a comment!

Samantha's vegetarian diet and well music related things

I forgot how much I love Blogger and just blogging in general. Let's hear it for Aaron because this new blog is lovely. I hope everyone enjoys this space because we do! Feel free to leave comments and tell us what you like, what you don't like, band suggestions, good/bad jokes, ask us on dates, whatever!

So as Aaron stated in an earlier post, we randomly decided to become vegetarians for two weeks during our show last Saturday night. Now those of you who previously know me will recall that I was a vegetarian from my senior year of high school until the summer of last year. So I guess being a vegetarian for two weeks will be a piece of cake for me, yeah? I'm not going to lie, it's pretty easy to get back into not eating meat because I still don't consume a lot of meat. My diet so far consisted of veggie sandwiches, salads, tofu curry, cheese pizza, burritos w/ veggie meat, and I can't recall the rest, but I promise it was all meat-free!

In other news, www.UCLAradio.com programming has returned and Think Big! was heard around the world for the first time in a month or so! It's great to be back with a beautiful new console and it was wonderful having Aaron in the station with me this time around. Unfortunately, I will be Aaron-less this weekend, but please do tune in and keep me company. As always, the best way to contact us during the show (which is on Saturdays, midnight-2 a.m., but you already knew that) is via AIM on bruinradio. There will be a theme, which I haven't decided on yet, but it will be very exciting! Request a song and dedicate to your mom in honor of Mother's Day or something. Ha, until this Saturday everyone.

Think Big! loves you,
Samantha

skillz....

i made these 2nite, enjoy...

Aaron's quest for vegitarianism days 1-4

so hey its aaron,
it took me a while to find a good website to host our blog...& this is it!! I'll see if i can pimp it out & make it better in my free time..but NEWAYZ, back to our vegitarianism challenge,

So yea we proposed on our show last saturday night that we should go veggie for two weeks. I forgot what happened exactly, but i agreed to do it. haha, i've done it before, but it didnt last more than a week. But this time is different, mostly because i have more motivation; which is sorta weird since this time it was a totally arbitrary decision. So yea, the first day (sunday) was easy since i didnt wake up till 1PM, so breakfast & lunch were pretty much taken care of with a bowl of Ralph's generic brand cereal. The one that is like captian crunch. Then for dinner i had some thai food... not bad, this veggie was easy for day one....

the rest of the days i've had something light for lunch like cereal, bread & butter, fruit etc. I tried my hand at cooking. i SUCK at cooking, like i enjoy the process. For real, like i get excited when im making it. However, i make rookies mistakes like not tasting it while im making it to see if its "just right".....its not, my food taste's bland. haha thats why 2nite, i ate at rubios :-P

*Note: by reading any poriton of this blog u now release your right to make fun of, judge, correct, or otherwise notice my bad spelling & grammatical mistakes. sorry sucka's but i suck at spelling!
